Another Quilt's doors opened in June 2008. But it's story goes back many more years! When I was younger, my sisters and I would spend many hours in fabric shops with my mother, wondering why my mother loved fabric so much. My mother had learned to sew from her mother, and her mother taught her. An art passed down from generation to generation. She made just about everything -play clothes, prom dresses, wedding dresses, curtains, slipcovers. As long as that fabric fit under that sewing machine foot, she made it! I could never understand why she loved to sew so much.
My interest in sewing, especially quilting, became rather unexpected one day. My daughter, Claudia, was diagnosed with a brain tumor when she was a little over 2 years old. After surgery, she needed radiation treatment to prevent re-growth. She became a patient at
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. While Claudia was there, she received a quilt made/donated by an Eleanor, from Douglasville Georgia. Claudia had found so much comfort from this quilt during her stay. I then realized how important the art of sewing is! Claudia’s treatments were successful and she is now an average 12 year old with no limitations!!
In the next few years to follow, I began to appreciate my mother's ability to sew. I believed her love and talent to sew, should be shared with others. So one day, my mother and I decided to start a longarm service. We are not sure how that decision came about and still laugh about that to this day. Well after two years of longarming, I went a step further and opened the doors to "Another Quilt."
After many hard hours of renovations, we converted a country home into “Another Quilt.” It is a very quaint country shop where quilters from all over have come! We offer classes, workshops, clubs and block of the month programs. We also have a wonderful Inspiration Room. This room is designed around one or more quilts. We want to inspire others to use their quilts in a fun, fashionable way in their homes. About every 4 months we change the room to a new theme. Some of our themes have been: “Don’t Feed the Bears” which was a log cabin room; “Sisters” were a room was shared by a big and little sister; “Chelsea’s Garden” displayed as a lounge with a violin and cello to illustrate a music room; “Some Where in Time” designed around antiques and a civil war quilts; and “Friends with Tractors” as if you were in a country barn enjoying some country music wrapped in a quilt. Men and boys of all ages love this tractor room -there is hay in this room too! These are just a few of the Inspiration Room themes over the years and we look forward to inspiring you with each new theme!
We use our porches for displaying other quilt items, like table runners, patio wraps, and small quilts. We are also lucky enough to have a clothes line to display quilts outside on those wonderful sunny days! One of our goals is always to give individual attention to quilters who visit us. We just love when quilters bring in their finished project to share with us too!
The one display that does not change is the quilt Claudia had received from Eleanor, Douglasville Georgia (2003) at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Someday I hope to find Eleanor so Claudia and I can thank her for this wonderful quilt! Do you know Eleanor by chance?
We have made many new and wonderful friends at “Another Quilt” and hope to continue to learn and grow along the way!
Thank you for your inspiration!
Warmly,
Chrissy & Elsie
